Because I Can

Over the past 10 years, the advances in almost every aspect of life are amazing. Computers are faster, cars can park without human involvement, batteries last longs, etc. etc. But, just because technology allows us to do certain things, does not mean we should do them.

Technology has allowed real estate agents to market properties in so many new and unique ways, connect to buyers that might have otherwise been missed, and share their successes to drive more business. It has also allowed agents to become lazy as well, especially with listing pictures.

At this point I know what most people are going to think. This is just Drew trying to pitch himself and sell his photography, and you would be right, kind of. I do think that the best route for quality listing images is to hire a professional. However, I realize that many agents are not for various reasons, the vast majority I will not go into. The one I will touch upon though is “my new iPhone (Android) takes better pictures then even my point-n-shoot.” I own the iPhone 4s, it is a great phone with an awesome camera. Annie Leibovitz recently stated that it was the best camera to take pictures with. I even used it for a number of pictures on my recent trip to Williamsburg, VA even though I had my DSLR with me. That being said I would not recommend listing photos be taken with any phone.

I recently ran across an app that was designed to help agents create panoramas and virtual tours with their iPhone. I watched a video and saw the first demo. It looked so cool, everything I do now, but with a phone. I went to the apps site to see more examples and, man, was I disappointed. They looked awful. Images not lined up, crazy colors, and photos that were just way too dark. What a bummer. I had been excited about the potential.

As I thought about it though, I realized, or remembered, that photography, even creating listing photos, is a skill. A skill takes human involvement and cannot be completely controlled by the newest gadget. So even if agents do not want to hire a professional photographer, at least take the time to learn your camera and try to create better pictures for your listings. It will pay off in the long run and your clients will appreciate the effort put in.
